How long does it take to learn the shinobue flute?

I frequently receive questions like, "How long does it take to play the shinobue well?" or "How long does it take to learn 'A Life Sent On'?"

According to Mr. Takuya Okawa, who runs a shinobue school in Shizuoka Prefecture:

"It really depends on the individual and what it means to "play well." If I were to answer this question, I would say that if someone practices daily, they might be able to play simple Japanese children's songs in about three months. However, it varies from person to person. Some individuals may struggle even after a year, while others might be able to play all the notes within a month. There’s no point in comparing yourself to others; it's essential to go at your own pace.

Playing the shinobue can be challenging at first, but the more you practice, the better you will become. As you improve, it becomes more enjoyable, and you'll be able to play songs you love. The shinobue will respond to your dedication.

What’s the key to getting better? There is one important tip: Spend time with the shinobue as if it were your own child."

It is important to note that Mr. Okawa is discussing his students, so the experience he shares pertains to those taking shinobue lessons.

Every shinobue journey is unique.

Don't compare yourself to others.

I see people playing "A Life Sent On" within a year of starting with the shinobue, even if they have no musical background. Their rhythm may be imperfect, and their fingering might differ from the original, but that doesn't matter. They are enjoying the shinobue!

However, if your goal is to play "A Life Sent On" exactly like the original, it may take you five years or more to achieve that level of proficiency.

It all depends on the individual and their goals.

Until you embark on your own shinobue journey, you won’t know what to expect! That’s why I named my YouTube channel "Miki Saito Shinobue Adventure!!"

Life with the shinobue is filled with surprises, challenges, and a great deal of joy.

As you explore the shinobue, you also discover a lot about yourself
