👄 Shinobue embouchure: Get your lower lip out of the way! 🫢

Learning how to get your lower lip out of the way can drastically improve your tone. Please see the picture above. Notice that their upper lips are a lot more prominent than their lower lips. This way, the breath goes straight down to utakuchi (mouth hole).

The upper lip works just like the mouth of a faucet. Why do you have a faucet? Because it DIRECTS water down to the sink. Without it, the water will spray all over the place. Just like that, your upper lip DIRECTS your breath down to utakuchi.

But something can come between your upper lip and utakuchi.

Your lower lip.

The upper lip is trying to direct the air down to the utakuchi, but if your lower lip is protruding, it can block the air.
